Values are easy to list and harder to demonstrate. Each of the eight below is set out with what it actually requires of the company in a trade — at the buying point, on the cleaning line, in the warehouse and on the paperwork.

Integrity

We describe what we sell exactly as it is.

Integrity in commodity trading is mostly about description. The grade, moisture, purity, origin and volume stated on an offer are the ones the buyer receives, and a problem is reported by us before it is discovered by anyone else. The company does not offer inducements to win business and does not accept them, and prices are quoted on the same basis to buyers in comparable positions.

Quality

Specification first, then price.

Every consignment is bought, prepared and released against a written specification. Produce is cleaned, sorted and graded before it is offered, samples are drawn and retained, and stock that does not meet the agreed standard is not despatched against that order. Where a buyer requires independent verification, inspection is arranged before shipment rather than argued about afterwards.

Professionalism

Prompt, prepared and consistent in every dealing.

Enquiries are answered quickly and completely, offers are written rather than verbal, and the people a customer deals with understand the commodity they are selling. The same standard applies at the buying end: farmers and suppliers are met with clear terms, honest grading and a considered explanation of why produce is priced as it is.

Accountability

We own the outcome, including when it goes wrong.

Each consignment has an identifiable owner inside the company, from purchase through preparation to delivery. Commitments on volume, quality and date are recorded, performance against them is reviewed, and where the company falls short it says so, explains the cause and agrees a remedy rather than transferring responsibility to a transporter, a supplier or the weather.

Customer satisfaction

Repeat business is the only meaningful measure.

Buyers are asked what they need before being told what is available: variety, grade, packaging, labelling, delivery terms and documentation. Requirements are confirmed in writing, progress is communicated without the customer having to chase it, and feedback after delivery is used to adjust how the next consignment is prepared.

Innovation

Better methods, judged by whether they improve the product.

The company looks for practical improvements in how produce is cleaned, sorted, graded, packed, stored and tracked, and in how buyers and suppliers are served — including better use of information, from intake records through to shipment follow-up. New methods are adopted because they demonstrably improve quality, traceability or reliability, not because they are new.

Sustainability

Trade that the next season can be built on.

Sustainable trading means suppliers who are paid fairly and promptly enough to farm again next season, produce handled and stored so that losses are minimised, packaging and waste managed responsibly, and business practices that respect the communities and environments the company buys from. Value that is extracted at the expense of the supply base is not value the company counts.

Excellence

The standard is the standard, on every consignment.

Excellence is consistency rather than occasional brilliance: the second container matches the first, the tenth delivery is documented as carefully as the first, and routine work is done properly when nobody is checking. The company reviews how each consignment performed and applies what it learns to the next one.
