Overview

Produce arriving from the farm carries soil, stones, dust, chaff, straw, weed seeds, broken and immature grain, and occasionally material from a different crop entirely. Cleaning removes it; sorting separates what remains into what belongs in the lot and what does not.

The sequence depends on the commodity and on the purity the buyer has specified. It typically combines size separation by sieve, density and air separation to lift lighter matter, destoning to remove heavy contaminants, and inspection to catch discoloured, damaged or otherwise defective units.

Cleaning is also a moisture control point. Produce that is above the moisture specified will not store or ship safely, so it is dried down and rechecked before it is allowed forward to grading.

  • Pre-cleaning to remove straw, chaff, dust and gross foreign matter
  • Sieving and size separation to the specified screen
  • Air and density separation to remove light material and hollow grain
  • Destoning to remove stones, soil clods and other heavy contaminants
  • Removal of broken, immature, shrivelled and discoloured units

  • Moisture reduction and verification before release
  • Purity check against the agreed specification before the lot moves on
Suitability

Who this service is for

  • Export buyers

Overseas buyers whose contracts and import requirements set a maximum for foreign matter, defective units and moisture.

  • Millers and processors

Users whose equipment is damaged by stones and whose yields depend on the purity of the material entering the line.

  • Packers and retail suppliers

Buyers packing into retail units, where visible contaminants are immediately apparent to the consumer.

Process

How it works

The sequence below is followed on every consignment, and each step is recorded so the consignment can be reconstructed afterwards.

  1. Assess the lot

A sample is drawn and assessed for foreign matter, defects and moisture, which determines the cleaning sequence to be applied.

  2. Pre-clean

Straw, chaff, dust and gross foreign matter are removed before the lot enters closer separation.

  3. Separate

Sieving, air and density separation and destoning remove material that differs from the product in size, weight or density.

  4. Sort

Remaining defective units — broken, immature, discoloured or damaged — are removed to bring the lot within its defect allowance.

  5. Verify and release

A fresh sample is checked against the purity and moisture specification. The lot is released to grading only when it conforms.
