Grading & Quality Inspection
A grade is only worth what the inspection behind it is worth. Every lot is sampled, assessed against its written specification and recorded before release.
Overview
Grading classifies cleaned produce by the characteristics a buyer pays for — size, uniformity, colour, moisture, purity, defect level and, where relevant, variety. Inspection is the check that the classification is accurate and that the lot as a whole matches what will be written on the offer.
Sampling is done to a defined pattern across the lot rather than from whichever sack is nearest, because a single convenient sample tells you about that sack and nothing else. Samples are retained after despatch, so that any later question about the consignment can be answered against the material actually shipped.
Where a buyer, a letter of credit or an importing authority requires verification by an independent party, the company arranges and coordinates that inspection before shipment, and makes the lot, the records and the samples available to the inspector.

How it works
The sequence below is followed on every consignment, and each step is recorded so the consignment can be reconstructed afterwards.
Confirm the standard
The grade definition to be applied is confirmed with the buyer, including tolerances for moisture, purity and defects.
Draw samples
Samples are taken across the lot to a defined pattern, combined and reduced to a representative working sample.
Assess
Moisture, purity, defects, size, uniformity and condition are assessed against the confirmed standard.
Classify and record
The lot is assigned its grade and a written inspection record is raised. Samples are retained and labelled to the lot.
Verify before shipment
The lot is re-checked before loading and, where required, presented to an independent inspector for certification.
